Downton Abbey recordings on DVR won't play

I recorded episode 4 series 5 of Downton Abbey on Sunday evening, as well as the program that immediately followed it on the same channel, but when I tried to watch the Downton Abbey program the next evening, it would not play.  The program was listed under the DVR listings indicating that it had been recorded for 1 hour and 5 minutes but pressing OK merely resulted in the screen going blank.  It never played and the little ball that shows progress stayed firmly stuck at the beginning of the program.  Yet, the program that followed on the same channel recorded and played back just fine.  So I recorded Downton Abbey again when it was next available.  I got the same result.  All indications are that it recorded and for the full length of time I had specified, but it won't play.  I contacted Verizon technical support and was told that it must be the provider restricting the playback.  Now, no one checked with the provider, this was just an assumption given as an explanation for a problem they couldn't solve.  Well, I contacted the local channel that was broadcasting the program and asked if Public Broadcasting was restricting recording and replay of this program and they said no, they don't restrict the programing as it is Public Broadcasting and is provided free.  It is on the web for free.  So what is the problem?  Could it be that the current series is provide by Verizon for view on demand at 2.95 a viewing and they are blocking the DVR from playing the recordings so Verizon customers will have to pay to watch a program that is provided free by PBS?  Anyone else encounter this problem?
